Chemical Peels

A chemical peel is a cosmetic procedure used to improve the appearance of the skin on the face, neck, or hands. It involves the application of a chemical solution to the skin, which causes the outermost layers to exfoliate and eventually peel off. This process stimulates the growth of new, healthier skin cells and can address a variety of skin concerns. Chemical peels are typically performed by dermatologists or licensed skincare professionals and can vary in intensity from superficial to deep, depending on the desired outcomes and the specific issues being treated.

There are three main types of chemical peels:

  • Superficial Peels: These peels use milder acids, such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), to target the outermost layer of the skin. They are often used to improve skin texture, tone, and mild discolorations. Superficial peels have minimal downtime and are suitable for people with mild skin issues.
  • Medium Peels: Medium-depth peels use stronger acids, such as glycolic acid or trichloroacetic acid (TCA), to penetrate deeper into the skin. They can effectively treat more significant skin concerns like wrinkles, fine lines, and moderate discolorations. Medium peels usually require some downtime for healing and recovery.
  • Deep Peels: Deep peels use stronger acids, usually phenol, to deeply penetrate the skin and address severe skin issues, such as deep wrinkles, scars, and pronounced sun damage. Due to their intensity, deep peels require a longer recovery period and are typically performed under sedation or anesthesia.

Chemical peels can be used to address various skin concerns, including:

  • Acne scars: Chemical peels can help improve the appearance of shallow acne scars by promoting the growth of new skin cells.
  • Fine lines and wrinkles: Peels can stimulate collagen production, leading to smoother and more youthful-looking skin.
  • Uneven skin tone: Peels can help reduce the appearance of sunspots, age spots, and hyperpigmentation, resulting in a more even complexion.
  • Sun damage: Peels can exfoliate damaged skin and encourage the growth of healthier skin, reducing the effects of sun damage.
  • Texture and tone: Chemical peels can improve skin texture by addressing roughness and enhancing overall skin tone.
